Populism and the Jacksonian Democrats Essay
Question: In what ways were the late nineteenth-century Populists the heirs of the Jacksonian-Democrats with respect to overall objectives and specific proposals for reform? The Populists of the late nineteenth-century were in many aspects the heirs of the Jacksonian Democrats, carrying on the legacy and tradition left behind. The Populists were very similar to the Jacksonians in many of their overall objectives and specific reform proposals. During the Jacksonian Era from about 1828-1842, the Democrats set the standard to be carried on later by the Populists. The Jacksonian Democrats identified with the common man. They wanted all democrats to agree. In 1828, Andrew Jackson was elected president and he was later reelected in 1832. In the year of his reelection, Jackson established the spoils system to reform the government, removing some federal officeholders (ââ¬Å"To the victor belong the spoilsâ⬠) and made the right of elected officials to appoint their own followers to public office and established feature of American politics. Also in this year, Jackson vetoed the bill to recharter the Bank of the United States. This sets the tone for his, and the Democrats, ongoing battle with the Bank and its president, Nicholas Biddle, later to rise to climax when Jackson removed federal deposits from the Bank of the United States. A year later, in 1833, the nullification crisis erupted, pushing Jackson and his Democrats into another battle, this one with John Calhoun and nullification. Jackson insisted that nullification was treason and those implementing it were traitors. The nullification crisis was averted by compromise: the lowering of the tariff of 1828, the tariff of abominations, gradually be lowered. Jackson believed in a distinct, but simple theory of democracy, that it should offer ââ¬Å"equal protection and equal benefitsâ⬠to all its white male citizens and favor no region of class over another. This meant an assault on what he considered the citadels of the eastern aristocracy and an effort to extend opportunities to the rising classes of the west and south. It also meant a firm commitment to the continuing subjugation of African Americans and Indians, keeping these ââ¬Å"dangerousâ⬠elements from the politic body to keep the white-male democracy they valued in preservation. Carrying on the Jacksonian legacy, the Populists were mostly farmers and industrial workers; they were the common man. They believed that wealth belonged to the working class, those who create the wealth, not the owners and a graduated income tax (as the income goes up, the tax rate goes up, so wealthier people pay more taxes than the poor). The Populists were champions of the workingman, pushing for better work conditions and a shorter workweek, as well as putting more money in the hands of the workers. One of the biggest reform proposals of the populists was bimetallism and free coinage of silver. Free coinage of silver would have increased the supply of money since silver was in easy circulation. An increase in the supply of money would generally lead to inflation unless the supply of goods and services by at least as much. As did many industrial workers fearing for their jobs, the Populists wanted to limit immigration. In carrying on the legacy left by the Jacksonian Democrats, the Populists exhibited many of the same ideas and proposals. The election of Andrew Jackson to the presidency in 1828 marked not only the triumph of a particular vision of government and democracy, it represented the emergence of a new political world. The Populists emergence in 1873 represented the emergence of a new political world as well. The Jacksonians may have represented and identified with the common man, but the Populists were the common man. During both eras, a main reform movement of each was to upset the eastern powers; Jackson was to defeat the stranglehold of the aristocratic east on the nationââ¬â¢s economic life; the Populists were set to defeat the stranglehold of the industrial east on the nationââ¬â¢s economic life. Both parties were champions of the common man, although it was the Populists championing themselves. The legacy and tradition left behind by the Jacksonian Democrats was aptly picked up by the Populists of the nineteenth-century.

My I Wish You d Die - 816 Words
ââ¬Å"I wish youââ¬â¢d dieâ⬠I whispered on the night of July 22, 2013. I laid in bed thinking about my, unfortunately, biological father. I was comparing him to my step-dad. Did I think he could of ever been as close of a father like my step-dad? A few days ago he had promised to pick me up earlier that evening so that we could spend a whole day together the following day, but he never showed up. Many times this had happened and I couldnââ¬â¢t stand it no longer. I looked at the clock and it ticked slowly, it seemed to be more tired than I was. A second seemed like a minute, a minute seemed like an hour, the night seemed like an eternity. I anxiously waited for sleep to engulf me. I m sorry he didnââ¬â¢t show up honeyâ⬠then she went on telling me how he was irrelevant in my life, despite him being my biological father. A few minutes later as I enjoyed a delicious cup of chocolate the house phone rang. I has offered to pick it up but my grandmother was already on her way. I sat in the kitchen sipping on my cup looking out the window. The sky had grown gray and I felt the hairs on my back stand up. My grandmother returned to the kitchen with eyes of sadness that stared at me as she stood under the arch. She tried to say something but no words were produced. ââ¬Å"Is something wrong I said asked?â⬠I had said as got up from my seat and made my way to the entrance of the kitchen. ââ¬Å"Your mother is on the phone. She, she wants to talk to youâ⬠We made our way to the living room where the phone was kept. I reached the phone and slowly placed it next to my ear. ââ¬Å"Hello?â⬠I spoke with fear. ââ¬Å"Christianâ⬠She had replied softly. ââ¬Å"Is something wrong?â⬠I asked as scenarios of what was possibly wrong with her took over my head. ââ¬Å"Christian,â⬠she sniffed. Blood Promise Chapter Nine Free Essays
string(70) " He took a step closer to where I sat, and I saw his guardians tense\." ââ¬Å"I thought you were a dream,â⬠I said. They all remained standing, the dhampirs fanning out around the Moroi in a sort of protective formation. Abeââ¬â¢s was the strange face Iââ¬â¢d seen while Iââ¬â¢d been going in and out of consciousness after the fight by the barn. We will write a custom essay sample on Blood Promise Chapter Nine or any similar topic only for you Order Now He was older than me, close to Olenaââ¬â¢s age. He had black hair and a goatee, and about as tan a complexion as Moroi ever had. If youââ¬â¢ve ever seen tan or dark-skinned people who are sick and grow pale, itââ¬â¢s a lot like that. There was some pigment in his skin, but it was underscored by an intense pallor. Most astonishing of all was his clothing. He wore a long dark coat that screamed money, paired with a cashmere crimson scarf. Below it, I could see a bit of gold, a chain to match the gold hoop earring he wore in one of his ears. My initial impression of that flamboyance would have been pirate or pimp. A moment later, I changed my mind. Something about him said he was the kind of guy who broke kneecaps to get his way. ââ¬Å"Dream, eh? That,â⬠the Moroi said, with the very slightest hint of a smile, ââ¬Å"is not something I hear very often. Well, no.â⬠He reconsidered. ââ¬Å"I do occasionally show up in peopleââ¬â¢s nightmares.â⬠He was neither American nor Russian; I couldnââ¬â¢t identify the accent. Was he trying to impress me or intimidate me with his big, bad reputation? Sydney hadnââ¬â¢t been afraid of him, exactly, but sheââ¬â¢d certainly possessed a healthy amount of wariness. ââ¬Å"Well, I assume you already know who I am,â⬠I said. ââ¬Å"So, the question now is, what are you doing here?â⬠ââ¬Å"No,â⬠he said, the smile turning harder. ââ¬Å"The question is, what are you doing here?â⬠I gestured back to the house, trying to play it cool. ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢m going to a funeral.â⬠ââ¬Å"Thatââ¬â¢s not why you came to Russia.â⬠ââ¬Å"I came to Russia to tell the Belikovs that Dimitri was dead, seeing as no one else bothered to.â⬠That was turning into a handy explanation for me being here, but as Abe studied me, a chill ran down my spine, kind of like when Yeva looked at me. Like that crazy old woman, he didnââ¬â¢t believe me, and again I felt the dangerous edge to his otherwise jovial personality. Abe shook his head, and now the smile was gone altogether. ââ¬Å"Thatââ¬â¢s not the reason either. Donââ¬â¢t lie to me, little girl.â⬠I felt my hackles going up. ââ¬Å"And donââ¬â¢t interrogate me, old man. Not unless youââ¬â¢re ready to tell me why you and your sidekicks risked driving that road to pick up Sydney and me.â⬠Abeââ¬â¢s dhampirs stiffened at the words old man, but to my surprise, he actually smiled again-though the smile didnââ¬â¢t reach his eyes. ââ¬Å"Maybe I was just helping out.â⬠ââ¬Å"Not from what I hear. Youââ¬â¢re the one who had the Alchemists send Sydney with me here.â⬠ââ¬Å"Oh?â⬠He arched an eyebrow. ââ¬Å"Did she tell you that? Mmmâ⬠¦ that was bad behavior on her part. Her superiors arenââ¬â¢t going to like that. Not at all.â⬠Oh, damn. Iââ¬â¢d spoken without thinking. I didnââ¬â¢t want Sydney to get in trouble. If Abe really was some kind of Moroi Godfather type-what had she called him? Zmey? The snake?-I didnââ¬â¢t doubt he could talk to other Alchemists to make her life even more miserable. ââ¬Å"I forced it out of her,â⬠I lied. ââ¬Å"Iâ⬠¦ I threatened her on the train. It wasnââ¬â¢t hard. Sheââ¬â¢s already scared to death of me.â⬠ââ¬Å"I donââ¬â¢t doubt she is. Theyââ¬â¢re all scared of us, bound by centuries of tradition and hiding behind their crosses to protect them-despite the gifts they get from their tattoos. In a lot of ways, they get the same traits as you dhampirs-just no reproductive issues.â⬠He gazed up at the stars as he spoke, like some sort of philosopher musing on the mysteries of the universe. Somehow, that made me angrier. He was treating this like a joke, when clearly he had some agenda regarding me. I didnââ¬â¢t like being part of anyoneââ¬â¢s plans-particularly when I didnââ¬â¢t know what those plans were. ââ¬Å"Yeah, yeah, Iââ¬â¢m sure we could talk about the Alchemists and how you control them all night,â⬠I snapped. ââ¬Å"But I still want to know what you want with me.â⬠ââ¬Å"Nothing,â⬠he said simply. ââ¬Å"Nothing? Youââ¬â¢ve gone to a lot of trouble to set me up with Sydney and follow me here for nothing.â⬠He looked back down from the sky, and there was a dangerous glint in his eyes. ââ¬Å"Youââ¬â¢re of no interest to me. I have my own business to run. I come on behalf of others who are interested in you.â⬠I stiffened, and at last, true fear ran through me. Shit. There was a manhunt out for me. But who? Lissa? Adrian? Tatiana? Again, that last one made me nervous. The others would seek me out because they cared. But Tatianaâ⬠¦ Tatiana feared Iââ¬â¢d run off with Adrian. Once more I thought that if she wanted me found, it might be because she wanted to ensure I didnââ¬â¢t come back. Abe struck me as the kind of person who could make people disappear. ââ¬Å"And what do the others want? Do they want me home?â⬠I asked, trying to appear unafraid. ââ¬Å"Did you think you could just come here and drag me back to the U.S.?â⬠That secretive smile of Abeââ¬â¢s returned. ââ¬Å"Do you think I could just drag you back?â⬠ââ¬Å"Well,â⬠I scoffed, again without thinking, ââ¬Å"you couldnââ¬â¢t. Your guys here could. Well, maybe. I might be able to take them.â⬠Abe laughed out loud for the first time, a rich, deep sound filled with sincere amusement. ââ¬Å"You live up to your brash reputation. Delightful.â⬠Great. Abe probably had a whole file on me somewhere. He probably knew what I liked for breakfast. ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢ll make a trade with you. Tell me why youââ¬â¢re here, and Iââ¬â¢ll tell you why Iââ¬â¢m here.â⬠ââ¬Å"I already told you.â⬠In a flash, the laughter was gone. He took a step closer to where I sat, and I saw his guardians tense. You read "Blood Promise Chapter Nine" in category "Essay examples" ââ¬Å"And I told you not to lie to me. Youââ¬â¢ve got a reason for being here. I need to know what it is.â⬠ââ¬Å"Rose? Can you come in here?â⬠Back toward the Belikov house, Viktoriaââ¬â¢s clear voice rang out in the night. Glancing behind me, I saw her standing in the doorway. Suddenly, I wanted to get away from Abe. There was something lethal underneath that gaudy, jovial facade, and I didnââ¬â¢t want to spend another minute with him. Leaping up, I began backing toward the house, half-expecting his guardians to come kidnap me, despite his words. The two guys stayed where they were, but their eyes watched me carefully. Abeââ¬â¢s quirky smile returned to his face. ââ¬Å"Sorry I canââ¬â¢t stay and chat,â⬠I said. ââ¬Å"Thatââ¬â¢s all right,â⬠he said grandly. ââ¬Å"Weââ¬â¢ll find time later.â⬠ââ¬Å"Not likely,â⬠I said. He laughed, and I hastily followed Viktoria into the house, not feeling safe until I shut the door. ââ¬Å"I do not like that guy.â⬠ââ¬Å"Abe?â⬠she asked. ââ¬Å"I thought he was your friend.â⬠ââ¬Å"Hardly. Heââ¬â¢s some kind of mobster, right?â⬠ââ¬Å"I suppose,â⬠she said, like it was no big deal. ââ¬Å"But heââ¬â¢s the reason youââ¬â¢re here.â⬠ââ¬Å"Yeah, I know about him coming to get us.â⬠Viktoria shook her head. ââ¬Å"No, I mean here. I guess while you were in the car, you kept saying, ?à ®Belikov, Belikov.ââ¬â¢ Abe figured you knew us. Thatââ¬â¢s why he took you to our house.â⬠That was startling. Iââ¬â¢d been dreaming of Dimitri, so of course I would have said his last name. But Iââ¬â¢d had no idea that was how Iââ¬â¢d ended up here. Iââ¬â¢d figured it was because Olena had medical training. Then Viktoria added the most astonishing thing of all. ââ¬Å"When he realized we didnââ¬â¢t know you, he was going to take you somewhere else-but grandmother said we had to keep you. I guess sheââ¬â¢d had some dream that youââ¬â¢d come to us.â⬠ââ¬Å"What?â⬠Crazy, creepy Yeva who hated me? ââ¬Å"Yeva dreamed about me?â⬠Viktoria nodded. ââ¬Å"Itââ¬â¢s this gift she has. Are you sure you donââ¬â¢t know Abe? Heââ¬â¢s too big-time to be here without a reason.â⬠Olena hurried over to us before I could respond. She caught hold of my arm. ââ¬Å"Weââ¬â¢ve been looking for you. What took so long?â⬠This question was directed to Viktoria. ââ¬Å"Abe was-ââ¬Å" Olena shook her head. ââ¬Å"Never mind. Come on. Everyoneââ¬â¢s waiting.â⬠ââ¬Å"For what?â⬠I asked, letting her drag me through the house to the backyard. ââ¬Å"I was supposed to tell you,â⬠explained Viktoria, scurrying along. ââ¬Å"This is the part where everyone sits and remembers Dimitri by telling stories.â⬠ââ¬Å"Nobodyââ¬â¢s seen him in so long; we donââ¬â¢t know whatââ¬â¢s happened to him recently,â⬠said Olena. ââ¬Å"We need you to tell us.â⬠I flinched. Me? I balked at that, particularly when we emerged outside and I saw all those faces around the campfire. I didnââ¬â¢t know any of them. How could I talk about Dimitri? How could I reveal what was closest to my heart? Everyone seemed to blur together, and I thought I might faint. For the moment, none of them noticed me. Karolina was speaking, her baby in her arms. Every so often sheââ¬â¢d pause, and the others would laugh. Viktoria sat down on a blanket-covered spot on the ground and pulled me down beside her. Sydney joined us a little while later. ââ¬Å"Whatââ¬â¢s she saying?â⬠I whispered. Viktoria listened to her sister for a few moments and then leaned closer to me. ââ¬Å"Sheââ¬â¢s talking about when Dimitri was very young, how he used to always beg her and her friends to let him play with them. He was about six and they were eight and didnââ¬â¢t want him around.â⬠Viktoria paused again to take in the next part of the story. ââ¬Å"Finally, Karolina told him he could if he agreed to be married off to their dolls. So Karolina and her friends dressed him and the dolls up over and over and kept having weddings. Dimitri was married at least ten times.â⬠I couldnââ¬â¢t help but laugh as I tried to picture tough, sexy Dimitri letting his big sister dress him up. He probably would have treated his wedding ceremony with a doll as seriously and stoically as he did his guardian duties. Other people spoke, and I tried to keep up with the translations. All the stories were about Dimitriââ¬â¢s kindness and strength of character. Even when not out battling the undead, Dimitri had always been there to help those who needed it. Almost everyone could recall sometime that Dimitri had stepped up to help others, going out of his way to do what was right, even in situations that could put him at risk. That was no surprise to me. Dimitri always did the right thing. And it was that attitude that had made me love him so much. I had a similar nature. I too rushed in when others needed me, sometimes when I shouldnââ¬â¢t have. Others called me crazy for it, but Dimitri had understood. Heââ¬â¢d always understood me, and part of what weââ¬â¢d worked on was how to temper that impulsive need to run into danger with reason and calculation. I had a feeling no one else in this world would ever understand me like he did. I didnââ¬â¢t notice how strongly the tears were running down my cheeks until I saw everyone looking at me. At first, I thought they considered me crazy for crying, but then I realized someone had asked me a question. ââ¬Å"They want you to talk about Dimitriââ¬â¢s last days,â⬠Viktoria said. ââ¬Å"Tell us something. What he did. What he was like.â⬠I used my sleeve to clean my face and looked away, focusing on the bonfire. Iââ¬â¢d spoken in front of others before without hesitation, but this was different. ââ¬Å"Iâ⬠¦ I canââ¬â¢t,â⬠I told Viktoria, my voice strained and soft. ââ¬Å"I canââ¬â¢t talk about him.â⬠She squeezed my hand. ââ¬Å"Please. They need to hear about him. They need to know. Just tell us anything. What was he like?â⬠ââ¬Å"Heâ⬠¦ he was your brother. You know.â⬠ââ¬Å"Yes,â⬠she said gently. ââ¬Å"But we want to know what you think he was like.â⬠My eyes were still on the fire, watching the way the flames danced and shifted from orange to blue. ââ¬Å"Heâ⬠¦ he was the best man Iââ¬â¢ve ever met.â⬠I stopped to gather myself, and Viktoria used the opportunity to translate my words into Russian. ââ¬Å"And he was one of the best guardians. I mean, he was young compared to a lot of them, but everyone knew who he was. They all knew his reputation, and lots of people relied on him for advice. They called him a god. And whenever there was a fightâ⬠¦ or dangerâ⬠¦ he was always the first one to put himself out there. He never flinched. And a couple months ago, when our school was attackedâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ I choked up here a bit. The Belikovs had said they knew of the attack-that everyone knew about it-and from the faces here, it was true. I didnââ¬â¢t need to elaborate on that night, on the horrors Iââ¬â¢d seen. ââ¬Å"That night,â⬠I continued, ââ¬Å"Dimitri rushed out to face the Strigoi. He and I were together when we realized they were attacking. I wanted to stay and help him, but he wouldnââ¬â¢t let me. He just told me to go, to run off and alert others. And he stayed behind-not knowing how many Strigoi heââ¬â¢d have to take on while I went for help. I still donââ¬â¢t know how many he fought-but there were a bunch. And he took them all down alone.â⬠I dared to look up at the faces around me. Everyone was so quiet and still that I wondered if they were breathing. ââ¬Å"It was so hard,â⬠I told them. Without realizing it, my voice had dropped to a whisper. I had to repeat myself more loudly. ââ¬Å"It was so hard. I didnââ¬â¢t want to leave him, but I knew I had to. He taught me so much, but one of the biggest things was that we have to protect others. It was my duty to warn everyone else, even though I just wanted to stay with him. The whole time, my heart kept saying, ?à ®Turn around, turn around. Go to him!ââ¬â¢ But I knew what I had to do and I also knew part of him was trying to keep me safe. And if the roles had been reversedâ⬠¦ well, I would have made him run too.â⬠I sighed, surprised Iââ¬â¢d revealed so much of my heart. I switched back to business. ââ¬Å"Even when the other guardians joined him, Dimitri never backed down. He took down more Strigoi than almost anyone.â⬠Christian and I had actually killed the most. ââ¬Å"Heâ⬠¦ he was amazing.â⬠I told them the rest of the story that Iââ¬â¢d told the Belikovs. Only I actually forced a little detail this time, telling them vividly just how brave and fierce he had been. The words hurt me as I spoke, and yetâ⬠¦ it was almost a relief to get them out. Iââ¬â¢d kept the memories of that night too close to me. But eventually, I had to tell them about the cave. And thatâ⬠¦ that was the worst. ââ¬Å"Weââ¬â¢d trapped the escaping Strigoi in a cave. It had two entrances, and we came at them from both sides. Some of our people got trapped, though, and there were more Strigoi than weââ¬â¢d expected. We lost peopleâ⬠¦ but we would have lost a lot more if Dimitri hadnââ¬â¢t been there. He wouldnââ¬â¢t leave until everyone was out. He didnââ¬â¢t care about the risk to himself. He only knew he had to save othersâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ Iââ¬â¢d seen it in his eyes, that determination. Our plan had finally been to retreat as soon as we were all out, but Iââ¬â¢d had the feeling he would have stayed and killed every Strigoi he could find. But heââ¬â¢d followed orders too, finally beginning his retreat when the others were safe. And in those last moments, just before the Strigoi had bitten him, Dimitri had met my eyes with a look so full of love that it was like that whole cave filled with light. His expression had said what weââ¬â¢d talked about earlier: We can be together, Rose. Soon. Weââ¬â¢re almost there. And nothing will ever keep us apart againâ⬠¦ I didnââ¬â¢t mention that part, though. When I finished the rest of the tale, the faces of those gathered were grim but filled with awe and respect. Near the back of the crowd, I noticed Abe and his guardians listening as well. His expression was unreadable. Hard, but not angry or scary. Small cups began circulating through the group, and someone handed me one. A dhampir I didnââ¬â¢t know, one of the few men present, stood up and raised his cup in the air. He spoke loudly and reverently, and I heard Dimitriââ¬â¢s name mentioned several times. When he finished, he drank from the cup. Everyone else did too, so I followed suit. And nearly choked to death. It was like fire in liquid form. It took every ounce of strength I had to swallow it and not spray it on those around me. ââ¬Å"Whâ⬠¦ what is this?â⬠I asked, coughing. Viktoria grinned. ââ¬Å"Vodka.â⬠I peered at the glass. ââ¬Å"No, it isnââ¬â¢t. Iââ¬â¢ve had vodka before.â⬠ââ¬Å"Not Russian vodka.â⬠Apparently not. I forced the rest of the cup down out of respect to Dimitri, even though I had a feeling that if he were here, heââ¬â¢d be shaking his head at me. I thought I was done being in the spotlight after my story, but apparently not. Everyone kept asking me questions. They wanted to know more about Dimitri, more about what his life had been like recently. They also wanted to know about me and Dimitri as a couple. They all seemed to have figured out that Dimitri and I had been in love-and they were okay with it. I was asked about how weââ¬â¢d met, how long weââ¬â¢d been togetherâ⬠¦ And the whole time, people kept refilling my cup. Determined not to look like an idiot again, I kept drinking until I could finally take the vodka down without coughing or spitting. The more I drank, the louder and more animated my stories became. My limbs started to tingle, and part of me knew this was all probably a bad idea. Okay, all of me knew it. Finally, people began to clear out. I had no idea what time it was, but I think it was the middle of the night. Maybe later. I stood as well, finding it much harder to do than Iââ¬â¢d expected. The world wobbled, and my stomach wasnââ¬â¢t very happy with me. Someone caught a hold of my arm and steadied me. ââ¬Å"Easy,â⬠said Sydney. ââ¬Å"Donââ¬â¢t push it.â⬠Slowly, carefully, she led me toward the house. ââ¬Å"God,â⬠I moaned. ââ¬Å"Do they use that stuff as rocket fuel?â⬠ââ¬Å"No one made you keep drinking it.â⬠ââ¬Å"Hey, donââ¬â¢t get preachy. Besides, I had to be polite.â⬠ââ¬Å"Sure,â⬠she said. We made it inside and then had the impossible task of getting up the stairs to the room Olena had given me. Each step was agony. ââ¬Å"They all knew about me and Dimitri,â⬠I said, wondering if Iââ¬â¢d be saying any of this sober. ââ¬Å"But I never told them we were together.â⬠ââ¬Å"You didnââ¬â¢t have to. Itââ¬â¢s written all over your face.â⬠ââ¬Å"They acted like I was his widow or something.â⬠ââ¬Å"You might as well be.â⬠We reached my room, and she helped me sit down on the bed. ââ¬Å"Not a lot of people get married around here. If youââ¬â¢re with someone long enough, they figure itââ¬â¢s almost the same.â⬠I sighed and stared off without any particular focus. ââ¬Å"I miss him so much.â⬠ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢m sorry,â⬠she said. ââ¬Å"Will it ever get better?â⬠The question seemed to catch her by surprise. ââ¬Å"Iâ⬠¦ I donââ¬â¢t know.â⬠ââ¬Å"Have you ever been in love?â⬠She shook her head. ââ¬Å"No.â⬠I wasnââ¬â¢t sure if that made her lucky or not. I wasnââ¬â¢t sure if all the bright days Iââ¬â¢d had with Dimitri were worth the hurt I felt now. A moment later, I knew the truth. ââ¬Å"Of course they were.â⬠ââ¬Å"Huh?â⬠asked Sydney. I realized Iââ¬â¢d spoken my thoughts out loud. ââ¬Å"Nothing. Just talking to myself. I should get some sleep.â⬠ââ¬Å"Do you need anything else? Are you going to be sick?â⬠I assessed my queasy stomach. ââ¬Å"No, but thanks.â⬠ââ¬Å"Okay.â⬠And in her typically brusque way, she left, turning off the lights and shutting the door. I would have thought Iââ¬â¢d pass out right away. Honestly, I wanted to. My heart had been opened up to too much of Dimitri tonight, and I wanted that pain to go away. I wanted blackness and oblivion. Instead, maybe because I was a glutton for punishment, my heart decided to finish the job and rip itself completely open. I went to visit Lissa. Diary Entry free essay sample
Father doesnââ¬â¢t agree that we should go back to Berlin. ââ¬Å"Karlââ¬â¢s not here and Danielââ¬â¢s not here and Martinââ¬â¢s not here and there are no other houses around us and no fruit and vegetable stalls and no streets and no cafes with tables outside and no one to push you from pillar to post on a Saturday afternoon. â⬠This place is just horrible. But I am shameful that I spoke to father in such disrespect. I didnââ¬â¢t really mean it, I just wanted father to know how horrible this place is and how nobody is ever going to happy here and we should really move back to the house in Berlin. I was really surprised that I shouted at father, I didnââ¬â¢t even know that I was going to shout at father. It was a complete surprise to me. I thought father was going to get really angry and I was even ready to make a run for it but nothing seemed to make father angry today. We will write a custom essay sample on Diary Entry or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page If I were to be honest with myself, I would have admitted that father rarely became angry. Instead he became distant and quiet and always had his way in the end anyway and rather than shouting at him or chasing him around the house, he just shook his head and indicated that their debate was at an end. Before leaving fatherââ¬â¢s office I asked him a final question but there was no point because I didnââ¬â¢t even understand what he meant. I asked him about the people that I can see from my bedroom window and he said that they arenââ¬â¢t even people. So who could they be? Father also said that I have nothing in common with those people and should stay clear from them. Then our conversation was finally to an end. I wish we go back home quickly and meet grandmother and grandfather and of course, my friends.

They specifically for you for only $16.38 $13.9/page Order now The history of the Wampanoag Indians began long before the 17th century and long before any European set foot on the North American continent. Twelve thousand years ago, the earliest inhabitants of northeastern North America were leaving marks on the land. They were known to their neighbors as the pokanoket which means place of clear land. The Indians told stories and passed their legends down from generation to generation. They even had a legend about how Nantucket was formed. The first encounter of the Europeans of the Wampanoag may have been written down in 1524. They grew a few staple crops for food: corn, beans, and squash. Farming, hunting, fishing, and foraging were essential to the day -to- day, and year-to-year survival of the Wampanoag. They survived by understanding and using the wild plants and animals of their region. Some of the same plants and animals are still on Nantucket today. By the beginning of the 20th century the Wampanoag people were living like any of their non-Indian, working class neighbors. In the 20th century their sense of identity as Indians would be revitalized. During the first few decades of the 20th century, the Pan-Indian movement was sweeping across the continent. The traditional customs of the Great Plains Indians came to symbolize the new identity of all Indians. In every section of the United States and Canada, Indians adopted Plains Indians dress along with some of that cultures rich ceremonials as symbols of Indianness. The Wampanoag Nation held its first powwow the following year in Mashpee, MA and have held one annually for many years afterward. If you are growing up as a Wampanoag in todays society, American Indian history and culture is often ignored by the non-Indian world. A Wampanoag LegendThe Beginning: How the Island Was Madefrom The Nantucket Indians, Legends and Accounts before 1659by Meredith Marshall BrenizerThere was a time in the dreams of the great-great grandfathers when the land was not here: no blade of grass nor reed, no corn nor tree, no nesting bird was on this place. There was nothing but the sea. A great giant named Moshop lived across the water with his beautiful wife, Squant, and their many papooses. He was a kindly, wise giant loved by all of his people, but he was so big that it took the whole length of the beach at Cape Cod to make him a bed. Strange visions came to Moshop one night as he slept. Tossing restlessly, he filled his moccasins with sand and they became heavy. Half asleep, he kicked one moccasin a short distance into the sea. Shrugging himself awake, he kicked the other a long way off toward the horizon. The first moccasin became the island of Noepe Marthas Vineyard. The second one became the island of Natockete, the far off place. (Nantucket)And this is how our land was born
